Taste Of The Island

Sri Lanka is a food lovers haven. You will taste some of the freshest dishes and colourful cuisine on the planet! This will include:

- Fresh Sri Lankan vegetarian and seafood based curries
- Dhal curry (lentil curry) is the most basic and common of Sri Lankan curries, this staple dish consists primarily of lentils, tomato paste, cumin, and other spices.

- Locally made traditional "rotties" (similar to pancakes with different ingredients inside)
- Also "Hoppers" - Sri Lanka’s bowl-shaped answer to the pancake, made from a coconut milk batter and filled with whatever your heart desires!

- Sri Lankan smoothies, known as "lassies"
- Eggplant moju (eggplant pickle)
- Kale mallung (kale and coconut salad)
- Kottu, also known as Kothu is a Sri Lankan dish made from rotti and vegetables, egg and/or meat, and spices.
- Samosas
- Fresh seafood

You will also eat some western dishes on your trip. All food is generally not spicy and portions are big!

Accommodation Details

All our homestays are hand chose by the founder of Island Spirit. Most rooms are comfortable, private doubles unless you request otherwise.

We have chosen a colourful mix of different accommodation to give you a feel for what Sri Lanka is all about. Briefly you will stay.

Activities
  • One surf lesson with Ama and his team on Welligama beach, suitable for all levels, a super fun day in the warm Sri Lankan waves.
  • Daily surf board hire is available. If you have time and want to practise surfing, board hire is included.
  • One yoga lesson with talented local teacher in his newly built Yoga Shala on a hill overlooking Mirissa
  • Kayaking - Half a day spent exploring a calm Sri Lankan lagoon. Be at one with nature!
  • Cycling - Guided by local resident, you will live like a local and cycle along the peaceful country lanes around Weligama
Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Your authentic, wildcrafted, Sri Lankan escape begins at Columbo airport where you will be collected by Kamal, the loveliest chauffeur you’ll meet! You will travel together for 2/3 hours to the canoeing river.

 

Day 2

A relaxing day on the beach to acclimatise and prepare for your inland walks.

 

Day 3

A day to discover the inland area around the rainforest. You’ll be led by your guide and can suggest ideas as you go.

 

Day 4

Day 5

A day to discover the inland area around the rainforest. You’ll be led by your guide and can suggest ideas as you go.

 

Day 6

Take an early morning drive through differing landscapes up to a 4 hour walk to incredible, far-reaching look out in Sri Lanka’s highest National Park.

 

Day 7

A day of travelling through the stunning landscape.

 

Day 8

Today is a long and strangely laid out day! Your walk to Adams Peak will start around 2am on Day 8. You will gander through walkways lined with stalls selling nik-naks which are brought for Poya, the monthly full moon celebration.

 

Day 9

It’s a rather long drive back to Weligama. You may arrive back in time for an afternoon yoga class, if not, then it’s an evening of pure relaxation!

 

Day 10

You can surf in the morning and take part in the yoga lesson in the afternoon. You are welcome to just lie on the beach too! This is a relaxing time for you to absorg your inland travels and get back to a slower pace of life.

 

Day 11

You can surf in the morning and take part in the yoga lesson in the afternoon. During the day you will take a tuktuk to the historic forte town of Galle. Here there is a wonderful array of shopping and eateries.

 

Day 12

You can surf in the morning and take part in the yoga lesson in the afternoon. Your half day trip into a local mangrove lagoon will give an insight into remote ways of rural life and a chance to by spices at a local spice shop. But be vigilant of the prices!

 

Day 13

A day of cooking, yoga and surfing. Bliss!

 

Day 14

Your last full day takes you to see the whales with the most ethical of providers. Yoga and surfing is on your return.

 

Day 15

We will organise one transfer to the airport for you to take advantage of.

 

Helpful Information

Flights

Return flights have been found at £393 (€456) via KLM, £456 (€530) pays for a direct route from London Heathrow with Sri Lankan Airways.

Fundraising

£200 | €250 – we will help you along the way to donate much needed funds which go towards the project equipment, logistics and a training program.

Fair Trade

By just travelling with Island Spirit you are already helping generate fair income for these tiny outer island villages. For example, each homestay host will receive a fair-trade price for their accommodation with three home-cooked meals. Other similar organisations don’t have to pay a fair wage.An example of how the smaller details go a long way.
